Changing entries on submitted Form 1065 returns
🔍 Changing entries on submitted Form 1065 returns
This guide explains what to do if you need to change entries after the IRS has accepted your electronic Form 1065 return.
⚠️ Before You Begin
You should know the following:
- After the IRS accepts an electronic return, it cannot be recalled or intercepted in the process.
- If the participant or partnership needs to change any entries after the return has been acknowledged as accepted, you must use an amended or corrected return.
📊 What You Need to Do
Step 1: Confirm the return was already accepted
Use this when you need to... verify that your electronic return was acknowledged as accepted by the IRS.
According to IRS Publication 1524 (page 40): After IRS accepts an electronic return, it cannot be recalled or intercepted in the process.
Step 2: File an amended or corrected return
Use this when you need to... change entries after acceptance.
If the participant or partnership needs to change any entries after the return has been acknowledged as accepted, an amended or corrected return must be filed.
Step 3: File on paper (not electronically) and mail it
Use this when you need to... submit the amended/corrected return using the correct method.
- The amended or corrected return cannot be filed electronically.
- The return must be filed on paper and mailed to the IRS.
- The amended or corrected return should be mailed to the IRS Center where the partnership would normally file their paper Form 1065 return.
