Step 1: Advise the taxpayer about Form 8836

The IRS will mail a package to the taxpayer containing Form 8836 and instructions for filing that form. Advise the taxpayer to either complete that form or bring it to you (the tax preparer) for completion when he or she receives the package.

Step 2: Mail the completed form using the package instructions

When the form is completed, mail it to the IRS using the instructions in the package.
